UA Makes a Mark in Winter State Tournaments!

All four of Ursuline’s varsity winter athletic teams, aswell as the Robotics Club, made appearances in their respective statetournaments this year! Way to go Bears!

Both the VarsityBasketball team and Varsity IceHockey team earned berths in the MIAA State Tournament. Both teams exited the tournament in the firstround after close, hard-fought contests. Varsity Basketball ended their season at 13-7, and the Hockey teamfinished with an 8-9-3 record and the title of Catholic Conference Tri-LeagueChampions.

Three UA Hockey Bears were also named Catholic ConferenceAll-Stars! Senior co-captains Delia andEmily earned the honor, along with the team’s goalie, Erica ’13. The JuniorVarsity Hockey team also had a great season, with a 7-7 record. One of the biggest highlights of the year forthe hockey teams was running into Boston Bruins All-Star Tyler Seguin at therink before one of their practices!

The Junior VarsityBasketball team put up some impressive numbers, with only one loss theentire season! They finished with a 17-1record. The Jr. High Basketball team also had a great season, finishing with an11-3 record. One of the highlights oftheir season was playing at halftime of a Boston College-Holy Cross women’sgame at BC’s Conte Forum!

Despite the lack of wintry weather, the Ski Team still had a great season this year! UA Skier Stephanie represented the team atthe State Alpine Championships at Mt. Wachusett, where she finished animpressive 28^th in a field of 138 skiers in the slalom race!

The Indoor Trackteam had a historic season: this year marked the first time that runners fromUrsuline Academy qualified for the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships! The team ran away with a second place overallfinish at the Division IV State Championships, led by the Champion 4 x 400 relayteam. Then it was on to the All Statemeet, where Amy ’15 ran a school record time of 41.72 seconds in the 300m race!

The 4 x 400 team of Maddie ‘14, Merissa ‘14, Amy ‘15 andMeghan ’13 was on fire in the post-season. They set a school record time in their victory at the Division IV StateChampionships, and then proceeded to shatter that record at the All StateChampionships the following week with a new time of 4:03.85! This new school record qualified the team forthe New England’s, and made UA athletic history.

The Robots in Plaid,Ursuline’s Robotics Club, had a great showing in their inaugural appearance in the FIRST Tech Challenge StateTournament. Not only did they make itall the way to the semi-finals of the competition, they also received the “MotivationAward” trophy! This trophy is given tothe team who exemplifies the most team spirit and enthusiasm as well as makes acollective effort to teach their school and surrounding community aboutrobotics. Congratulations to the Robotsin Plaid!

The alumnae speakers at Ursuline Academy’s 15^thAnnual Women in Leadership Symposium last Friday morning followed threedivergent paths after graduating from Ursuline: one entered the world offinance, another psychology and the other, publishing.

But they all had one thing in common, aside from being proudUrsuline girls. Each speaker emphasizedthe importance of seeking mentors and the advice of others, no matter whatcareer path one takes.

The annual Women in Leadership Symposium is an opportunityfor current Ursuline students to do just that: connect with and learn fromalumnae. Three impressive alumnae spoketo Grades 9-12 about their professional and personal journeys since leaving thehalls of Ursuline Academy.

Jane King '61

Jane King ’61 isthe president of her own investment firm, Fairfield Financial Advisers, Ltd.,and has been named to the Worth Magazinelist of America’s Best Financial Advisors. Her determined spirit has brought her great success in the male-dominatedbusiness world. King said she was oftenthe only woman at conferences when she first started working in the investmentbusiness, but that did not deter her from forging her own path. She urged the girls to take opportunities,and learn as much as they can along the way.

“I’m going to offer you advice, and I do so with a greatdeal of humility,” King said. “In theworld of working, show up every day…find and develop mentors, stay in touch andrun your career choices or life choices by them, and then third, always beprofessional. Dress the part…and beprofessional always in your manners.”

Mary Beth O'Leary '05

Mary Beth O’Leary ’05began her speech by recalling the first time she thought about her futurecareer options: when she was in the seventh grade at Ursuline Academy. As a student in Mrs. Anderson’s math class,O’Leary crafted an imaginary budget for when her future 22-year-old self: she wouldgraduate from the College of the Holy Cross, move to beachfront property inMiami with her best friend and be an elementary school teacher.

“Let me tell you which of these things came true,” shesaid. “I did go to the College of theHoly Cross…but if you couldn’t tell from my lack of a tan, I don’t live inMiami. Instead, I live with my two bestfriends from Ursuline in Boston.” O’Leary is a Marketing/Publicity Coordinator at Cell Press, Elsevier,the world’s second-largest publishing company, which publishes one third of theworld’s scientific, technical and medical content. O’Leary advised her fellow Ursuline girls toembrace and learn from new experiences, even if they are unanticipated. O’Leary’s future did not follow her seventhgrade plan, and her career path has also taken some unexpected turns. As an English major in college, she neverexpected to be working in the science field, but she said that she has neverbeen happier. The secret to her successis advice that a mentor once gave her:

“She told me that often in your career it is as much aboutthe experience as the goal. If I letmyself make the most of the new position I had and the diverse experiences itoffered me, rather than fixating on what my next step was going to be, the restwould take care of itself.”

Dr. Suellen Walsh Rother '85

Dr. SuellenWalsh Rother ’85, a clinical psychologist, took the UA students on ajourney through her life after Ursuline. She even brought along a travel bag, which she packed with her advicefor the future. She weaved the adviceinto anecdotes from her life as an undergraduate and Ph.D student at FordhamUniversity and then as a clinical psychologist.

When Dr. Rother first arrived at Fordham, she thoughtshe wanted to be a pediatrician, but it was with the help of one of her mentorsthat she realized psychology better suited her interests and personality. “Always remember to consult with others,” shesaid, as she pulled a sheet of paper out of her travel bag with those words onit. “It is important that you havepeople that you trust and respect to go to and talk to.” She also told the girls that being flexibleand open to new experiences was another important item to pack in your suitcasefor the journey of life. But she endedwith the most important piece of luggage: “Have fun while you’re on thisamazing journey!”

The symposium ended with a Q & A and networking session,giving the students the opportunity to talk with the speakers individually andlearn a bit more about their lives and careers. Many thanks to our wonderful speakers for coming back to Ursuline forthis event! We hope you enjoyedreturning to campus as much as we enjoyed having you back!

Student Council representatives posted quotes about true inner beauty throughout the hallways to remind each UA student that she is beautiful!

Service in Haiti

Last Friday, the Ursuline Academy community learned aboutthe empowering effect of service in Haiti.

Donna Cullinan

Donna Cullinan, a practicing nurse practitioner and aClinical Assistant Professor at the Boston College School of Nursing, came toUA with three of her nursing students from BC on Friday morning. Cullinan has traveled to Haiti many timesover the past ten years to offer her nursing services to those in need. She is also in charge of the Community Healthprogram for senior nursing students at BC, and through this program brought tenof her students to Haiti in January 2012.

Cullinan and her three students shared stories and photosfrom their week of service in Haiti, emphasizing the sense of hope in thecountry as it continues to recover from the devastating earthquake in January2010. Cullinan and the students saidthat their philosophy was to enable the people of Haiti and to help them helpthemselves. “Don’t just do, teach,”Cullinan said when describing their approach. “Respect their culture and traditions and work with them to do it theirway, not your way.”

The nursing students emphasized the importance of making aconnection with the people, noting that even though they were just students andnot certified nurses, they still felt they were able to make a difference bylistening and showing that they cared. Inaddition to offering medical services and a helping hand, the group also raisedmoney to bring medications like Tylenol(c) and Advil(c) with them to Haiti.

The UA students enjoyed the presentation and were eagerparticipants when Cullinan opened the floor to questions. They asked whether children or adults inHaiti needed more help ("both," the BC nursing students said), and why we don’thear more about the hardships in the country. Cullinan left the students with an inspiring message: “All of you caneffect change in a positive way,” she told them.

Advice from the Experts: Draper Lab Guest Speakers Visit the 9th Grade at UA!

These are just a few of the great pieces of advice thatGrade 9 students received from three female guest speakers from DraperLaboratory in Cambridge. The speakerscame to talk to the ninth grade students during their Monday Guidance period onJanuary 23 and 30.

Ensign Emily Frost

Ensign Emily Frost is a graduate of the Naval Academy and acurrent graduate student at MIT. Sheconducts research for her master’s degree at Draper, and came to speak tothe girls on the 23^rd. On the30^th, Melinda Brown, General Counsel, and Beth Mora, VP of Financeand Administration, spoke with the students.

Ensign Frost will be a captain on a Navy ship in Hawaii aftershe completes her degree at MIT and research at Draper. Her research involves autonomous planning forunmanned underwater vehicles.

Brown, a graduate of Wellesley College, spoke very highly ofall-female education and advised the girls to, “Think in terms of leaving yourcomfort zone, and explore and try new things.”

Mora also benefitted from all-female education: she receivedher MBA from Simmons College. All threewomen urged the students to fully explore their interests, especially in thesciences.

The girls eagerly plied the guests with questions, fromasking if they had taken AP classes in high school, to how old they were whenthey decided on a profession, to what it is like to be a woman in a traditionallymale-dominated field.

"It is one of the goals of theGuidance Department to expose our students to various careers,” said Directorof Guidance Mary Ferrucci. “The Grade 9students benefited from hearing our speakers talk about their high schoolexperience, as well their colleges and career paths. And, while still a few years away, I believeit expanded our students’ thoughts about their own college and careerprocess."

An Olympiaganza at UA!

Over the weekend, the Ursuline Academy Drama Club performed a hilarious version of The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza.

The 65-person cast made the audience laugh out loud throughout both performances, taking them on a tour though the Greek myths, with a few modern additions. The Greek god Orpheus sang Justin Beiber's song "Baby" and on Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece, some of the sirens he met danced to "Single Ladies" by Beyonce.

After the matinee performance on Saturday, the community gathered for the annual Spaghetti Supper. The Tea Room was transformed into an Italian restaurant, complete with an accordion player, as families enjoyed delicious spaghetti and meatballs prepared by a dedicated group of Ursuline fathers. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success!

Robots in Plaid

You’ve seen it on students walking the halls of UA, and evenon a bear or two. But the latest fashionplate to model the Ursuline green plaid is none other than a robot.

Ursuline’s Robotics Club, nicknamed the Robots in Plaid, isworking to incorporate some of that well-loved green plaid into the design oftheir robot.

“We designed and built the robot from scratch,” said Haley,a sophomore and one of the founding members of the club. “Then we program software so the robot cancomplete tasks, like knocking crates over or tossing balls, for ourcompetitions.”

The UA Robotics Club competes against teams from areaschools as part of the FIRST Tech Challenge. Their Round 1 Regional Qualifier took place on January 14 and the Robotsin Plaid finished in a seven-way tie for 5^th place out of the 20teams competing.

Their achievement is all the more impressive because theclub is only in its second year. Theystarted small last year but have grown to an enthusiastic 18-member group. The girls are preparing for the Round 2Regional Qualifier on February 4, with their eyes on a spot in the StateTournament.

By then they hope to have their robot proudly sporting theUA green plaid, said Alex, a sophomore and another founding member of thegroup. She enjoys how robotics gives herpractical experience for the future.

“This is what I want to do in college, and as a profession,”she said. “And nothing gives youexperience like robotics does.”

“I hope that by being in Robotics Club the girls can findapplied uses for the concepts they are learning in school,” said Dr. MichaelRicard P ’15, one of the moderators of the club and an engineer at Draper Labin Cambridge.

Two of Dr. Ricard’s colleagues at Draper Lab, Eric Nelsonand Emily Vincent, also assist with UA robotics. The girls in the club attribute much of thisyear’s growth and success to the influence of these three Draper volunteers.

“We were very excited that we got to work with the Draperteam,” said Catherine ’12, another founding member. “Our robot is much more sophisticated thisyear, and I attribute that to the Draper team’s help in taking our concepts andmaking them happen by guiding us with the right questions.”

And while the Ursuline girls are very grateful for their newmentors, Dr. Ricard sees benefits for both groups.

“Eric and Emily provide a different type of role model tothe girls than a parent, and I also think it’s important for them to havefemale engineers like Emily as role models,” he said. “And I can’t tell you how many times Eric andEmily have told me, ‘Thank you for getting me involved in this!’”

And whether the Robots in Plaid make the state tournament ornot, it will still have been a great season.

“As a senior, I’m really proud of what robotics has done,”Catherine ’12 said. “We were just afledgling team last year and we’ve grown and improved so much this year.”

Looking Ahead to Second Semester

Mid-term exams are over, the first semester has drawn to aclose and the year 2012 is in full swing here at Ursuline Academy.

We are looking forward to our gatherings as a community inthe coming months: performances of TheGreek Mythology Olympiaganza during the last weekend in January, the SpaghettiSupper on January 28 and the Father/Daughter Dance on February 3. We will also celebrate the Feast of St.Angela Merici, the founder of the Ursuline Order, in a liturgy on January27. Please join us as we come togetherto celebrate the Ursuline community at these events!

The Mass honoring St. Angela on the 27^th willlead into Catholic Schools Week, which takes place from January 29-February 3,2012. As we celebrate our Catholicidentity, I thank you all for partnering with Ursuline Academy in the educationof your daughters.

Throughout this season of winter, we will cheer on ourUrsuline athletes and Robotics Club as they compete in their events, as well assupport the endeavors of our other clubs and extracurricular activities.

We are also grateful for the many blessings we have here atUrsuline Academy. Members of the Classof 2012 have been the recipients of much good news in the new year, with theclass gaining admission to a total of 70 colleges and universities thus far. And we continue to be blessed with awonderful faculty, staff and parent volunteer community. Thank you for all that you do for UrsulineAcademy.

Class of 2011 Comes Home to Ursuline Academy

They walked the halls, talked to their teachers andclassmates and snacked in the Tea Room, just like old times. Last Friday, the Class of 2011 came home toUrsuline Academy for their Yearbook Signing.

“It feels like we never left,” said Shannon ’11, who attendsLoyola University Chicago. “I evenlooked for my old parking space when I pulled into the parking lot.”

It is a tradition at Ursuline Academy for the graduatingclass to return to their alma mater in January for their Yearbook Signing. This year’s class was eagerly anticipating beingtogether again and seeing their yearbooks for the first time.

“It’s good to see everyone and talk about the last fivemonths of our lives,” said Dana ’11. “Weall missed each other. You always wantto go back to the people you’re close to.”

And not only do the girls miss each other, but they alsomiss their green plaid skirts! Thegeneral consensus among the Class of 2011 was that they missed their UAuniforms.

Anna ’11, a student at Harvard and member of the Crimsoncrew team, said, “I miss the uniform, rolling out of bed and putting the skirton.”

Tara ’11 attends McGill University in Montreal and enjoysthe international setting for learning.

“I love being in a big city, and it’s very European,” shesaid. “But I do miss the all-girlsclasses. Boys tend to take over, so youhave to assert yourself like an Ursuline girl.”

Tara also praised the small classes and teacher interactionat her alma mater. “Don’t take it forgranted while you are here,” she advised her fellow Ursuline girls, after takinga physics class with 700 students this past semester.

The Ursuline community welcomed the Class of 2011 back withopen arms and was thrilled to hear about their college adventures across thecountry and the world! Come back anytime ladies; it was wonderful to see you! You will always have a home here at Ursuline.

Dear Ursuline community,

During this Advent season, we are often reminded that thebirth of Jesus, the Light of the World, is a symbol of hope and love. As we eagerly anticipate Christmas and theNew Year, we are grateful for the signs of hope and love in each of our lives.

Here at Ursuline, we are grateful for the hard work of thefaculty and staff to advance the mission of our Academy, and for the UrsulineSisters, whose tireless efforts were the foundation of this mission. We are also blessed with wonderful parents,students and alumnae, who make up the vibrant and supportive Ursuline family. Ursuline Academy was truly blessed in theyear 2011, and we look forward to all that 2012 will bring!

Spirit of Service

Last Thursday, the Ursuline Academy community celebrated theFeast of the Immaculate Conception and the Peer Minister CommissioningCeremony.

During the liturgy, twenty-one Seniors were commissioned as PeerMinisters for the 2011-2012 school year. Each peer minister received a pin and lit a candle, and then Fr. Clancy blessed the students in their new ministry.

Peer Ministers are spiritual leaders in the Ursuline community. They meet once a week to plan liturgies,prayer services and retreats for the school community with the guidance ofUrsuline campus minister Mrs. Costa and religion teacher Ms. Tracy.

One of the much-loved traditions of Peer Ministry atUrsuline is the weekly ritual of choosing one Peer Minister to walk in thefootsteps of Jesus for a week.

“Every week, we pick one person’s name out of a hat, andthey reflect on how Jesus would act throughout the week,” said Peer MinisterMegan W. “At the end of their week they share their experiences with us and we also write letters andaffirmations to them.”

In choosing the Peer Ministers, “We are looking for leadership qualities, thegirl who works to her ability, is responsible and who gives her time inservice,” said Mrs. Costa.

The group of twenty-one Peer Ministers chosen this year is thelargest group ever and they are eager to share their faith with their fellowstudents.

“I have been at Ursuline since the seventh grade andI’ve always looked up to the Peer Ministers,” said Michaela M. “I wanted to be a good example for otherstudents, as they were for me.”

“My faith is a huge part of my life, so to help others atUrsuline to enhance their faith and grow in their love of God is important tome,” added Kathleen G., another Peer Minister.

Mrs. Costa and Ms. Tracy are both looking forward to workingwith this group for the remainder of the school year.

“It’s been a joy so far,” Mrs. Costa said. “They each have a heart of gold and are willing todo anything for anyone, so it has been wonderful to share with them and havereflections with them.”

Early delivery from Santa!

An early delivery from Santa arrived at Ursuline Academy this morning: the Smartboards(c) purchased with the proceeds from the 2011 Brescia Ball!

The ten brand new Smartboards(c) will be installed in classrooms this week. Now, each classroom at Ursuline will be equipped with a state-of-the-art Smartboard(c) for teachers and students to use during class.

The 2011 Brescia Ball netted $90,000, an 8% increase from last year! Your generous support and donations enabled Ursuline Academy to purchase these new Smartboards(c), and will also contribute to an upgrade of the computer network. These improvements will enhance the educational experience of each of your daughters, and prepare them for success in today's constantly-evolving technological landscape. It truly is a "Wonderful Life" at Ursuline Academy and we thank you for your support!

Fall Activities Roundup

It has been an exciting fall season at Ursuline Academy on the playing field, on the stage, and in the science lab! Check out how our sports teams, musicians, and Robotics Club fared this fall:

UA's Varsity Soccer team had a record-breaking season in 2011, making it all the way to the South Semifinals of the MIAA State Tournament for the first time in school history! Along the way they notched 4-2 victories against both Abington High and Norfolk Agricultural. Way to go Bears!

Our Cross Country team also made some history this season, winning the Catholic Conference league meet for the first time! Both the Varsity and JV teams ran away with the victory. The varsity also competed in the MIAA Girls' State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 19 at Franklin Park, and came in a record 15th place in the Division 2 race. Three UA runners were also named Catholic Conference League All-Stars: Norah G., Meghan G., and Cayla K. Congratulations girls!

The Ursuline Swimming and Diving team came in 12th out of the 25 teams competing in the MIAA State Tournament at MIT on November 19! The Bears had two top-ten finishes in diving, with Demi M. coming in 3rd, Caroline G. coming in 6th, and Lexi H. finishing in 11th. On the swimming side, Abby L. finished 6th in the 100 backstroke and 7th in the 100 fly, with Caroline P. grabbing a 12th place finish in the 500 free. Great job girls!

Congratulations to Catherine R. and Berleine G., who both qualified for the Massachusetts Music Education Association (MMEA) Districts! Catherine plays the trumpet and Berleine plays the bass. Way to go girls!

The Robotics Club is gearing up for their scrimmages in December and January! The club has been hard at work in designing and building their robot to be used in local scrimmages in mid-December and the Massachusetts First Tech Challenge State Tournament in January. The club members are planning a trip to MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory next week, where they will see real robots in action and gather ideas that can be used on their own robot.

In this season of Thanksgiving, we are reminded of the manygifts and blessings we have here at Ursuline Academy. At a time when we have so much for which tobe grateful, it is important to pause and take time to count these blessings.

Thank you to the entire Ursuline community for workingtogether and giving so generously of your time and talented creativity. The recent Brescia Ball was a huge successthanks to your efforts. Your generositymakes Ursuline Academy a special place to work, study, and grow!

In particular, thank you to the faculty and staff who embodythe spirit of Serviam in theirtireless efforts to create a positive and nurturing environment for yourdaughters. With their dedication, allthings are possible.

At our Thanksgiving liturgy on November 22, we will offer aspecial Memorial Mass for Mrs. Fran Lahey, a beloved former faculty member, andJohn Brendan O’Connor, Sister Mary O’Connor’s brother who passed away recently. Although they are no longer with us, wecontinue to be grateful for their presence and influence in each of our lives.

We must also be grateful for the leadership of the UrsulineSisters, especially Sister Angela Krippendorf o.s.u. ’59, who was honored at theBrescia Ball this past weekend. We are blessedto have the sisters as models of faith, women who truly live Serviam each day.

The Brescia Ball is a celebration of the mission of Ursuline Academy and honors members of the Ursuline community for their outstanding contributions. This year we will recognize Sister Angela Krippendorf o.s.u. '59, former math teacher Mary Anderson, and Lisa Rubini '79.

Sister Angela Krippendorf o.s.u. '59 has been part of the Ursuline Academy community since its days on Arlington Street in Boston. She has served this community, and other Ursuline schools, as a teacher, principal, trustee, and Provincial of the Northeast Region of the Ursuline Sisters.

Mary Anderson

Mary Anderson was a beloved math teacher at Ursuline for the past sixteen years, inspiring hundreds of students. Mary retired in the spring of 2011. She and her family also created the Anthony Anderson Scholarship in memory of Mary's late husband; the scholarship is awarded to an outstanding eighth grade student each year.

Lisa Rubini '79 is a dedicated alumna, who quietly gives her time and talent to many worthy causes in the community. She is a living example of our motto Serviam.

Proceeds from the event will be used to improve the school's technological capabilities, including upgrading the computer network and completing the installation of Smartboards(c) in all classrooms at Ursuline.

UA Library gets a makeover with Brescia Ball funds

With the installation of a brand-new Smartboard on the back wall, the Ursuline Academy library renovations are officially complete!

Funded entirely by proceeds from the 2010 Brescia Ball, the renovation transformed the library into a modern study space.

The library technology is completely up-to-date, with eight brand-new computers--four Macs and four PCs--in addition to the Smartboard. There are also new tables and chairs throughout the room, and separate study spaces for small group work.

The 2011 Brescia Ball is quickly approaching on Saturday, November 19, and there are more big plans in the works to enhance the Ursuline Academy experience. The 2011 Brescia Ball objective is to improve technology at Ursuline. All the money raised at the event will go towards upgrading the computer network and completing the installation of Smartboards in all the classrooms at UA.

UA-CM Swim Meet Fundraiser Makes Headlines

The word is out about the successful Ursuline-CM Swim Meet Fundraiser!

The event was featured in articles on Boston.com and West Roxbury Patch last week, after the Ursuline swimmers presented a $3,500 check to Catholic Memorial president Paul Sheff and the CM swimmers on October 24.

All of the money raised will go towards the Christopher Donlon '12 Scholarship Fund at Catholic Memorial School.

Spirit of Serviam Comes Full Circle at Mission Day

At Mission Day on October 18, the spirit of Serviam came full circle for Ursuline graduate Erin O'Malley, Class of 2008.

O'Malley volunteered in Njabini, Kenya with Flying Kites Global, the recipient of the money raised at this year's Mission Day, and was back on campus for the event.

"Mission Day meant so much to me when I was a student at Ursuline, and I was always involved in the planning," O'Malley said. "It was such a full circle feeling for me, when I was back this year planning with Mrs. Costa."

Decorations transformed each of the homerooms into a different booth full of treats and surprises. The Beary Best Bakery was a popular spot, and the Top Hat Raffle featured an array of donated prizes, including a Pandora bracelet, a Vera Bradley bag, and gift cards to Legacy Place.

Flying Kites Bazaar at Mission Day 2011

Another popular booth was the Flying Kites Bazaar, where O'Malley sold handmade scarves, hats, and slippers from Njabini Apparel, a business she started with a fellow volunteer in Kenya. "We employ disabled and disadvantaged mothers in the community of Njabini to handknit these items, and economically support and empower them," O'Malley said.

Junior Abby Sullivan said the Country Store was her favorite booth, because it had been her homeroom in 7th grade. But she also pointed out that Mission Day is not only about treats and goodies.

"I think it is important to make sure we are aware of the problems, not only in our own community, but around the world," she said. "It's important to live out our Serviam motto globally."

Sophomore Nora Reyad said that the best part of the day was watching the 7th graders enjoy their first Mission Day. The sophomores are Big Sisters to the 7th graders as part of Ursuline's Big Sister Little Sister program.

"The 7th graders are our Little Sisters, and it's so great to see the excitement on their faces," she said. Reyad and her Little Sister, Carine Hajjar, had some fun with the beanbag toss in the Game Room.

The final count of the money raised is not in yet, but O'Malley already considers Mission Day 2011 a success.

"Serviam is so ingrained in the UA experience, and it's a huge reason why I got involved with Flying Kites Global and Njabini Apparel," she said. "I'm so happy with how involved the girls were today, and it was incredible to see and be around their energy again!"

Ursuline Hearts Unite with CM for Swim Meet Fundraiser

The stands at the Dedham Pool were packed with cheering fans, watching Ursuline and Catholic Memorial swimmers take each other on in a doggie paddle relay.

Not exactly your typical swim meet.

On Sunday, October 16, the Ursuline and Catholic Memorial swim teams came together to host a swim meet fundraiser for the Chris Donlon Memorial Scholarship at Catholic Memorial.

The scholarship is in honor of Chris Donlon, who passed away last March. Donlon's twin sister Marissa is a senior at Ursuline.

Johanna Wilber '12, a friend of both Chris and Marissa, helped to organize the event.

"Chris was a very good friend of mine, and it was important for us to do something," she said. "We contacted the CM swim team on a whim and they were all for it."

The Ursuline and CM swim teams each split in half to form teams made up of swimmers from each school. The two new teams spent the afternoon swimming relays and trying for raffle prizes, and when all was said and done, they had raised about $3000 for the Chris Donlon Memorial Scholarship at Catholic Memorial.

"I just want everyone to know that I'm very grateful," Wilber said. "A big thanks to everyone who came out."

One Week Until Mission Day!

It’s time to start the countdown: Mission Day is just oneweek away!

For the girls, next Tuesday, October 18, will be a day offun, treats, games, and laughter. Eachhomeroom will become a themed booth, featuring donated items that can bepurchased by students, parents, and friends of the school. Some of the highlights from last year werethe Tropical Smoothie room, the Beary Best Bakery, and the Fenway Park booth.

But all this fun will also benefit a good cause: theproceeds will go to Flying Kites Global, a non-profit children’s home inNjabini, Kenya, striving to provide exemplary care to some of the world’s mostvulnerable children.

Several Ursuline alumnae have volunteered in Kenya withFlying Kites Global, bringing the spirit of Serviamwith them around the world. On MissionDay that spirit will be right here at Ursuline as the girls raise funds tosupport the children of Kenya through Flying Kites Global. Some of the proceeds will also support Ursuline missions around the world.

Ursuline Hearts Unite to Fight Breast Cancer

Congratulations to all the Ursuline Academy students who walked in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 2. As of today, our school community has raised over $16,000 to support the American Cancer Society.

This Sunday, October 2, 2011 Ursuline students and staff will walk together along the Charles River in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. As of today, our school community has raised $11,895 to support the American Cancer Society. Buses will depart Ursuline Academy at 8:00A.M. sharp on Sunday and our students will be speaking at 9:10A.M. Senior Catie Chipman is our student leader/spokeswoman. Buses will leave the Hatch Shell at 11:15am and will be back at UA for pick up at noon.

Making Strides Walk

Please take a moment to watch Ursuline Academy's version of the "Pink Glove Dance,"(Google: Ursuline Pink Glove Dance) inspired by the staff of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Oregon. Students, faculty and staff got together to create the video as a way to show our deep commitment to the fight against breast cancer, and to remind all those women battling cancer that "after a hurricane comes a rainbow."

Principal Mary Jo Keaney announced today that Ellsyssa B. Chinnaswamy and Norah C. Griffin have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the Academy and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

8th Grade: Movin' On Up!

Ursuline Academy's Class of 2015 are moving up in the world! On June 10th, the 8th graders gathered to celebrate their transition to high school at a "Move-Up Mass"celebrated by Father Richard Clancy. The class participated in the ceremony and delighted parents and friends with their rendition of "This Little Light of Mine." Each student received a certificate to celebrate their achievement in middle school, and the ceremony concluded with a 'circle of love' to celebrate all those who support their education. Michaela Chipman received the Anthony L. Anderson Scholarship and Sarah Hayden received the first Bruce Romano Memorial Scholarship at the ceremony, in recognition of their academic and personal achievements at Ursuline Academy. Congrats to our newest Freshmen - welcome to High School!

Beneath a clear blue sky, the members of the Ursuline Academy Class of 2011 stepped gracefully down the convent steps, careful not to step on the fringe of their crisp white dresses. They sat quietly in the shadow beneath the tree outside the Tea Room, where friendships were formed and memories were made. They recognized the accomplishments of their classmates, and stepped forth confidently to receive their diplomas. Their hard work at Ursuline Academy will ultimately gain them bright futures, and we are so confident that this unique class of sisters will reach new heights. God Bless, Class of 2011. We hope that you will return to Lowder Street soon, where we will receive you with open arms.

A large group of soon-to-be-graduates returned to Ursuline for a day of "service with a smile." The girls put on their play clothes and got to work helping with chores around the Ursuline campus. From weeding to dusting to cleaning the brand new UA Bus, these young ladies worked hard during their Senior Week and offered to give their time without being asked! Congratulating the Ursuline Class of 2011

Dear Ursuline Academy Families,

The warm spring days harbinger new beginnings. Soon, the bare branches will burst with buds, and beautiful flowers will color the landscapes. Soon, too, our seniors will graduate from Ursuline Academy and embark on the journey to college. We are so proud of our seniors.

In the seamless passing of time, each senior has grown into a young woman before our eyes, and each has become part of the fabric of the larger Ursuline Academy community. Each girl has left her mark on her classmates, on her teachers and on Ursuline Academy, and each is ready to take on new challenges. How grateful we, at Ursuline Academy, are to all parents who entrust their daughters to us!

The road to college is a group effort, and it is filled with anticipation, with preparation and with dreams. Parents spend countless hours planning, researching and visiting potential colleges with their daughters. Faculty not only prepare our girls for college lovingly and rigorously throughout their years at Ursuline Academy, but also they graciously write thoughtful recommendations that highlight the strengths of our students. Mrs. Ferrucci, Mrs. Scott, and Mrs. Sullivan meet with students, counsel them thoughtfully, and write detailed recommendations celebrating the whole child. Mrs Cutter coordinates the mailing of all applications and records admission results and scholarships. The guidance team are tireless advocates, encouraging cheerleaders and reassuring voices in a process sometimes fraught with high emotions. They welcomed many college counselors to Ursuline Academy, brought two college fairs to our campus and travelled throughout the year to build relationships with colleges. This June, Mrs. Ferrucci will travel with Catholic counselors to Ireland to explore opportunities there. I am grateful for the guidance office’s professionalism and devotion to our girls. They leave no stone unturned for our girls.

The list of all of our college acceptances is one that fills us with pride, and I share our results this year with all of you to celebrate our wonderful girls. The seniors worked hard, and they earned options. Always, I advise parents to think about fit when it comes to selecting college. Dream colleges do happen, but dreams also happen at colleges that were not a first choice and that end up being the best fit for a young woman.

How blessed we, at Ursuline, have been to share in the development of these wonderful young women! Their loving parents who selected Ursuline Academy for their daughters each shared a dream. They wanted their precious girls to grow as scholars, as servants of God, as leaders, as athletes and as artists. They wanted them prepared for life and for college. We share our parents’ dreams, and we pray for all of our girls’ continued success.

The Power of One:
Ursuline students learn powerful lesson from Holocaust survivor

Deciding to do the right thing, is not always the easiest choice. However, according to Holocaust survivor Rena Finder, doing the right thing when no one else will, can sometimes make all the difference.

Rena thoughtfully passed this message along to the students of Ursuline Academy when she visited the school to share her story of hope, courage and survival on April 7. She spoke of the terror that spread through her home of Krakow, Poland when German soldiers invaded in 1939, the poor treatment of Jewish citizens, and the one man who decided to help against all odds.

"Oskar Schindler is a perfect example of the difference one person can make," she said of the "tall, handsome" man who took it upon himself to protect Jews like herself by providing work opportunities in his factory, despite his association with the Nazi regime. "He did not have the heart of a Nazi," she said.

Rena shared details of her struggle in the ghetto, where she lived with her family until every relative but her mother was taken away by soldiers. She talked of the anguish felt by all who experienced Auschwitz, and the dehumanizing experience that caused her to feel dead even though she was still breathing. While physical pain and illness became commonplace for the oppressed Jews, Rena said she was most sickened by the decided ignorance of her neighbors.

"They didn't see us. They didn't help. They didn't care," she said of her gentile neighbors, once friends who carried on with their lives even as Rena and her family were tortured by German soldiers in the streets. According to Rena, they had no courage in the face of opposition, and decided to simply do nothing.

Rena recalled the dreadful day that her family was ordered to leave their comfortable home in Krakow, to find a tiny room in the ghetto across town. As the family descended their stairs, they knocked on the door of their neighbors to say goodbye; but there was no answer. As the family left the house, they looked back only to see their neighbors peeking from their windows, afraid to become involved.

"It is better to do something than to do nothing," Rena told the Ursuline students, and encouraged them to be that courageous person who gets involved or finds help when another person is treated poorly. Though her story seems unimaginable, it is a true example of the power one person has to positively affect the lives of many.

Ursuline Academy had the unique opportunity to welcome Rena Finder with the support of"Facing History and Ourselves," an educational program that invites students to examine and discuss the actions that led to horrific events in our world, so that they may learn how to better react in the face of opposition. The school is currently integrating aspects of this program into the curriculum to expose students to examples of injustice in our world, with hopes that they will realize how important their positive actions can be to society. Facing History provides resources to schools, such as featured speakers like Rena Finder.

The students of Ursuline Academy are so grateful that Rena was able to share her story of courage, which ended happily due to the kindness of a stranger named Oskar Schindler. They will now go into the world with a bit more courage to do the right thing, when no one else will.

Ursuline Academy Wins

2010 Making Strides High School Challenge!

It's official! Thanks to the generous support of Ursuline students, parents, grandparents, friends and alumnae, our students were able to come out on top in the High School Challenge to support the ACS 2010 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Boston. In only our second year supporting this important event, we more than tripled the amount of dollars raised by our community in 2009 to bring the total to just over $24,000. We are proud to be pacesetters in the race to find a cure for breast cancer, and look forward to making even larger strides in 2011.

Innocents Abroad: Ursuline & Xaverian students will always have Paris!

Au revoir, America! Over the winter break, a daring group of Ursuline Academy and Xaverian Brothers High School students jetted to France (Le Magnifique!) to immerse themselves in foreign culture, cuisine, couture, and crepes!

French language students from both schools joined the first part of an exchange program with the Institution Sainte Marie in Toulon, France. Each stayed with a host family and had the opportunity to attend classes at a French high school. During the first week abroad, students enjoyed daily excursions to Monaco, Marseille, Avignon and Toulon. Ooh la la!

The students were able to immerse themselves in typical French life with their host families on the weekends. After a week and a half in the south of France, the group traveled to Paris for 3 days of fun! While traipsing around the City of Lights, they saw many famous monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame Cathedral. They also visited the famous Musée d’Orsay and Louvre Museum. (No word on if they cracked the Da Vinci Code).

On the last day, the group visited Napoleon’s tomb at the Invalides and went to the Chateau de Versailles. The students were able to improve their French speaking and listening skills while savoring traditional French cuisine and having an extraordinary experience they will never forget.

Ursuline Academy and Xaverian will welcome French students to the Land of Liberty in April. C'est la vie!

Ursuline students make their mark at Model UN Conference

So when senior year rolled around and they recognized that Ursuline did not offer many opportunities for students to explore and discuss global affairs outside of the classroom, the girls teamed up to initiate Ursuline Academy's very fist Model United Nations Team.

"We know that a lot of girls at Ursuline are interested in politics, but there wasn't an outlet for open debate or discussion," said Hevert, who recently signed up her newly formed team to participate in the 10th Annual Boston Invitational Model United Nations Conference at the fancy Park Plaza Hotel in Boston. The two day conference, sponsored by Boston University, welcomed over 1,300 high school students from around the world to discuss civics, economics, diplomacy and globalization.

"We got to meet lots of new people, from many different countries," says Hevert, who was assigned to represent the country of Norway during the event. "It was really fun."

Twenty Ursuline students were divided into committees and represented a variety of countries. Their research and preparation was conducted prior to the event, so that they were prepared to offer probable resolutions to current issues. Abigail Sullivan '13 represented Bulgaria and discussed the peaceful use of outer space and the possibility of utilizing satellites to monitor natural disasters.

"Bulgaria tends to cooperate with surrounding countries," said Sullivan, who agreed with Hevert that the forum was a perfect opportunity to practice public speaking skills.

Though it was their first year as a club, Hevert says that Ursuline's inaugural UN team made a strong first impression at the annual invitational conference.

"We learned a lot. Even thought it was our first time, we definitely made our mark."

Signed, sealed: Miscellania delivered flawless performance

Miscellania, Bowdoin College's oldest female a cappella group, stopped by Ursuline Academy on their 2011 east coast tour to perform an up-beat selection tunes for students and faculty.

Eileen Palmer, a senior at Bowdoin and also the cousin of our own Mary Glass (Gr.7), arranged a slew of popular hits from multiple decades for the nine young women to perform. Favorites among students include It's In His Kiss by Betty Everett, Annie Lenox's classic 90's jam, Walking on Broken Glass and Signed, Sealed Delivered, I'm Yours by Stevie Wonder.

Principal Mary Jo Keaney, a graduate of Bowdoin, says the group is welcome to stop by on their next east coast tour. Let's hope that can be 'arranged.'

Ursuline Drama kids "Get Smart"

Would you believe that Ursuline students are preparing to take on an internationally ranked organization of evil on January 28th ? Would you believe the 29th?

If you have not already heard through your shoe phone, The UA Drama Club is going undercover in their upcoming production of Get Smart on January 28th AND 29th.

The script, adapted from the popular 1960s television series, is a spoof on 'secret agent thrillers' and focuses on a clumsy agent named Maxwell Smart (also known as Agent #86) and his astute young side-kick Agent #99. The pair, working for the top-secret U.S. intelligence agency CONTROL, work to halt the sinister plots of an evil organization known as KAOS. Audiences will chuckle as they follow the agents on a slew of mis-adventures, complete with fun props and physical comedy.

The challenging role of Maxwell Smart will be played by junior Caitlin Bradley. 8th Grader Michaela Chipman, who played a memorable Charlie Bucket in this past spring's "Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory" musical, will take on the role of his partner-in-crime(fighting) Agent #99. Laura Robinson will tell them whose boss, as the Chief.

After all that action and adventure, you may find yourself a bit hungry. If that is the case, please join us (after the January 29th Saturday matinee, 4pm) for Ursuline's annual Spaghetti Supper. All students and their families are invited, with the exception of anyone working for KAOS.

Ursuline Hosts "Melting Pot Panel"

"Behind a person with an accent, there is always a wonderful story," says Spanish teacher Patricia Sivan, who recently worked with Ursuline's student-driven Diversity Club to organize a discussion featuring speakers willing to talk about their experience living in the United States as an immigrant.The eight person panel featured parents and relatives alike, each with a unique journey.

Paul Lugten, father of Emma (Gr. 11) and Julia (Gr. 9), grew up in Great Britain and shared his surprise at the commercialism in the U.S. He commented that plethuras of options make even the simplist of things, like ordering a sandwich, complicated.

Art teacher Elena Balmaseda-Scherer spoke of the language barrier she encountered after moving to the states from Cuba as a child, and how she learned to express herself through art.

Regina Muyuela, mother of Demi (Gr. 11) moved to the U.S. from the Phillipines, and shared a story about a time she was questioned by the police simply because she tried to pay for home decor with cash, just two days after arriving in the country.

Jyothi Malempati, mother of Sravya (Gr. 11) shared a hearfelt story about being apart from her family in India, for two years.

Montserrat Vera-Llonch, mother of Agata Atayde (Gr. 9), came from Spain and was surprised at the mixed messages sent to women about where they stand in society.

Elizabeth Conpagnone, aunt of Francesca (Gr. 12) and Elizabeth (Gr. 7) moved from Italy as a child and taught herself English. She encouraged the students to be patient with people who have an accent.

Mrs. Pauline Clarke, mother of Naedia (Gr. 9) and Nikkia (Gr.7) came from Jamaica, and shared a story about how her graduate school put her in incorrect classes because they did not understand that English was her first language. She also talked about her lack of preparation for a cold first winter in Boston!

Senora Sivan says that the event was "inspired by celebrating differences," which is the main goal of the newly-founded Diversity Club. The group meets weekly to discuss race, nationality, immigration and even women in the work place. Though the first participants were members of minority groups, the club has expanded to include students of all backgrounds.

"Race was extremely interesting to discuss," said Sivan, who showed the students a film about the Black Doll vs. White Doll Experiment. Many students were outraged at the result: that a black child chose the white doll as superior. She says that projects like this spark important conversation among young people, which helps them to learn as they grow.

The Diversity Panel will likely host a similiar panel next year, and would encourage any person, with or without an accent, to share their story.

The students grew anxious for Christmas time.

With Jack Frost at work, keeping temperatures low,

They stared out the window, and prayed for some snow.

While teachers worked hard to keep their attention,

Most daydreamed of sugar plums, which got them detention.

For fun they wore scarves, and hats and beads,

Their uniforms looked like plaid Christmas trees.

Even the Grinch was happier than the girls of UA,

Who couldn’t wait for Christmas, even one more day.

Then loud from the Tea Room there came such a clatter,

They sprang from their classrooms to see what was the matter

When what through their wondering eyes did they see?

Good Old Saint Nick, or at least it appeared to be...

He gave them a hug, and said "Ho Ho Ho."

"Christmas is coming soon, don't you know?"

He was sent to the Principal oh so fast,

Because he did not have a visitor's pass.

After some photos, and a cookie or two,

Back through the Parking Lot Santa flew.

The students rejoiced, for Christmas was near,

"Thanks Santa," they said. "We'll see you next year!"

Coaches Get "Heads Up" About Concussions

The expression "get your head in the game" is not to be taken literally. Athletic and recreational activities contribute to approximately 21% of all traumatic brain injuries among children and adolescents, a fact which inspired Ursuline Athletic Director Mike O'Connor to give Ursuline's coaches a "heads up" about this prevalent danger for young athletes.

With the arrival of the 2010 winter athletic season, when students participate in typically aggressive sports like basketball and hockey, it is critical for coaches to know how to recognize and respond to head injuries. Armed with a packet of crucial information put out by the Centers for Disease Control on the signs and effects of concussions, coaches are heading into the season with a greater awareness of whats' at stake.

"If an athlete gets her bell rung, she will not return to the game," says O'Connor, who is implementing a new policy which will forbid any injured player from returning to the game after a blow to the noggin. "It is not worth the risk."

According to the Children's Hospital Boston website, "most organized sports-related injuries (60 %) occur during practice." While this statistic seems high due to the nature of competition, Ursuline athletic trainer Kim Leverone says that some athletes are pushed harder at practices than games.

"Kids are literally throwing themselves out there to earn their spot on team," says Leverone, who is present at most practices and games. When it comes to the responsibility of the coaches, she has some advice: "When in doubt, get the player checked out."

In addition to educating coaches, Ursuline will also require baseline testing for each athlete. The test, which includes challenging cognitive and physical ability, will be performed by Leverone so that she may accurately recognize when a student is not at her best.

Though Ursuline is making an effort to make the dangers of concussions known to coaches and staff, it is most often the injured athlete herself who becomes her own worst enemy following an accident during play. Students are more likely to ignore prominent symptoms of a concussion to stay in the game, which is why coaches are also encouraging their players to recognize the signs.

"All concussions are serious," according to the CDC Fact Sheet for Athletes. "It is important to rest and not return to play until you get the OK from your health care professional that you are symptom free."

In short, "mind over matter" is the best way to stay in the game.

'A bird in the hand is worth...bragging rights'

Ursuline is first girls' school to participate in Kiss 108 Turkey Toss

Throwing a bird in the oven may be the conventional start to Thanksgiving, but launching a frozen gobbler across Medford's Meadow Glen Mall parking lot rang in the holiday just fine for the hundreds of local high school students who showed up for Kiss 108's Annual Turkey Toss on November 24.

As the sun rose, so did the frozen turkey. Though the 'tossers' and 'receivers' are required to be members of their school's football team, the 'Matty In the Morning' crew decided to open this year's competition to welcome their first ever female competitors from Ursuline Academy. As strong athletes and member's of UA's unofficial Powder Puff Football Team, seniors Jill Lawler and Cassandra Sadd knew they had the skills to compete with the ten other boy's teams in attendance. "We practiced with a 12 pound turkey," said Cassandra.

The preparation was half the battle, according to Jill Lawler, who admitted that the toss would be her first chance to 'shot put' a turkey. Though students listened each morning as host Matt Siegel shared his doubts about the team's potential to beat the strong competition, the girls were determined to make their mark in Medford. "It will only make them try harder," said Student Council rep Nicaela Chinnaswamy, who took the bold first step of getting her school into the competition.

"[She's] about to make history here," said Boston sports anchor Mike Lynch, as he introduced Jill just before the throw. A few feet away stood 'catcher' Cassandra, ready to snatch the 22 pound bird from mid-air. On the sidelines, a man dressed as a turkey stood in quiet anticipation. On the radio, we heard Kiss 108's Lisa yelling "Let's go girls," as the crowd roared. And then...the throw!

"Long story short...they beat the Marines," said Ursuline's Principal Mary Jo Keaney, who watched the girls complete a flawless pass to nab 4th place. "The Mighty Bears," as they were called by host Billy Costa, may not have won, but they certainly gobbled up a good chunk of the competition, which included football quarterbacks and military men.

The girls, who will never look at Thanksgiving dinner the same way again, plan to pass their techniques along to Ursuline's next team of talented turkey tossers.

Ursuline athletes recognized for clean play

Grantland Rice, the great sportswriter once said, 'It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." Though most players shoot for victory in the face of opposition, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has made a point to recognize those high school teams who are able to keep their cool in the heat of play.

This year, Ursuline Academy's Varsity Soccer Team received the MIAA Sportsmanship Award for their commendable attitude toward opposing teams and officials during the fall 2010 season. The team was the only girls squad chosen from a multi-division pool of nominees, and athletic Director Mike O'Connor was happy to nominate the girls for the honor.

"I think they only got one yellow card this season, and it was debatable," he said, with a smile.

According to the MIAA website, "the awards are presented to those teams who have demonstrated a sincere commitment to the highest ideals and objectives of sportsmanship during their season of play."

Upon investigating statistical information about each team, such as number of cards presented, the MIAA takes into account each team's nomination to determine which group is most deserving of the recognition. Mr. O'Connor says that the most vibrant example of sportsmanship occurred during a game in which Ursuline could have won by many goals, but worked to keep the score low so not to embarrass the opposing team. During the game, one of Ursuline's goalies had a chance to score her first high school goal, but made a decision to play fair and kick the ball away.

Since the team could not attend the state championship final game held this weekend, captains Kiki Shea and Mikaela Prego, as well as Coach Forte, ventured to the MIAA Headquarters in Franklin to receive the honor on behalf of their teammates.

"Congratulations," said MIAA Asst. Director Dick Baker, who presented the plaque. "Your team should be very proud, this is a very important award."

Ursuline athletes headed to the big leagues

The Ursuline Academy athletic program has significantly evolved over the last three decades, transforming from a “one sport a season” pastime to a competitive program featuring fourteen varsity teams.

Ahead of its time in many ways, the program was up and running long before stipulations of Title IX slipped in to open doors for female athletes. Since Ursuline’s mission is to provide a well-rounded education for young women, a program was put in place shortly after the school opened, offering volleyball, basketball and softball to interested athletes. Over time, as the emphasis on health education for young people grew, so did the number of athletes representing the Bears.

A well-organized athletic program in an academically renowned school often breeds a collection of outstanding and well-rounded athletes. In the past twenty years, we have recognized three students for scoring 1000 points on the basketball court, seen numerous young women honored by the MIAA for balancing sports and school, and have proudly cheered-on a handful of athletic achievers as they embarked on careers as collegiate competitors.

The Class of 2010 is fortunate to have many accomplished athletes, each of whom exhibited leadership and commitment as they moved up the ranks. However, for Dana Weston and Katie Kenney, the journey is only beginning, as they prepare to leave the Bears in June to join Division I collegiate programs next fall.

Come September, all-scholastic athlete Katie Kenney of Dedham will dive head first into a career with the Boston University Terriers, as a member of the Women’s Swim Team. With a solid finish to her high school career last Saturday, finishing first in all of her races, she is looking forward to being a small fish in a bigger pond at BU.

“I couldn't be happier about my choice to commit to Boston University. It is a great fit for me,” she says. “The school has a very strong program for the area of study that I want to go into - physical therapy, and when I went on my recruiting trip I clicked immediately with the coaches and the team. I'm really looking forward to my next four years as a Terrier!”

As for volleyball captain Dana, whose team wrapped up the season with an impressive 13-4 record and chance at the tournament, a smaller pond with a winning team is worth the trip to Worcester.

“I am so excited to continue my volleyball career at a school I absolutely love,” says Dana, who will join the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders in September. "Volleyball is my passion and I cannot wait to learn more about it and to evolve into a better player at a collegiate level.”

While some athletes pursue college-level careers and others are recruited, it is well known that coach’s ultimately hope to attract dedicated athletes who will be able to stay above water academically as the season heats up. Holy Cross Volleyball Coach Marritt Cafarchia says that she asked Dana to join the team because of her great ability and academic promise.

“I saw Dana play on a couple occasions this summer," says Cafarchia. "She plays with passion and has fantastic athletic ability. Not only is Dana a great player, she is also a great student and more importantly a great person. Dana puts her heart into achieving what she wants. We look for players that have enthusiasm, drive and determination to succeed, like Dana.”

With two seasons still ahead for Ursuline's senior class, it will be interesting to see if any more students decide to pursue dreams of collegiate athletic glory. However, no matter where their paths may lead, it is comforting to know that every UA athlete is a Bear for life.

More Than Ever, Media Matters

Remember the days before cable television streamed onto our flat screens—when network news told us what we needed to know, soap operas tugged at our heartstrings and educational programming entertained the kids? Well, it appears that with the turn of the century came a turning point for mass media. These days, we find comedians reading the news, teenage moms with top ratings, and Katy Perry on Sesame Street. Though more channels and less structure provide more options for viewers, the sundry presentation of information which has become the norm is creating a generation unable to differentiate fact from fiction on the airwaves.

In the early ninety’s, media maven Linda Ellerbee recognized that this aggressive influx of diverse content was perhaps dangerous for young minds. “Media literacy is not just important, it's absolutely critical. It's going to make the difference between whether kids are a tool of the mass media or whether the mass media is a tool for kids to use," she said. With this notion, she launched “Nick News” on Nickelodeon to give young viewers an opportunity to evaluate and discuss the news of the day –to weed out those important facts and figures they may have missed between cartons and commercials.

With the same goal in mind, The Boston Globe and UMASS Boston partnered to provide local students with an opportunity to not only recognize the power of media, but to understand that they can contribute, starting now! On a blustery November day, Ursuline Academy’s senior Communications class joined other local students for the “Media Matters Writing Conference” at UMass, where they attended various workshops hosted by Boston’s most notable communicators. The goal of the program, which is in its sixth year, is to introduce young minds to the importance of journalism and media messaging, and to instill an early interest in communicating.

In one room, Sean P. Murphy of the Boston Globe spoke of our society’s reaction to investigative journalism, while down the hall Rebecca Steinitz of WriteBoston taught students to cleverly construct a food review (using delicious props). Later that day, The Globe’s Derrick Z. Jackson presented colorful photographs narrated by colorful anecdotes, while Dan Rea of WBZ Radio's NightSide discussed the importance of radio as a medium for our nation. Though some aspects of the program appealed to students more than others, many left with a better understanding of how they may one day contribute to the media medium, in one form or another.

While students attended mid-day workshops, teachers enjoyed a lively presentation from award-winning media veteran Liz Walker, formerly of WBZ-TV, whose message was one of “love.” In a sermon style speech, she encouraged those educators before her to love the students they teach and to help them to realize their potential in our society. She emphasized great impact of those messages sent by Martin Luther King in response to the political issues of his time.

To integrate this "field-trip" into the Ursuline curriculum is to provide students with an opportunity to explore the channels of communication so that they may begin to recognize the impact of messages and the ways in which they can contribute. Though most students remain undecided about a job in journalism or communications at this point, they have come to recognize that those messages they see on television, online or in the newspaper are shaping their society. It is up to them if they wish to join the conversation.

Facing History, Finding Themselves

New program encourages students to take responsibility, starting now

Adolf Hitler was not on Facebook. The white students of Little Rock Central High did not utilize FormSpring to ask negative questions about the nine African American students who enrolled in their racially segregated school in 1957. Bus driver James Blake did not take a Tweet-pic of Rosa Parks at the front of the bus. However, despite the fact that these historical bullies did not have access to modern vehicles of communication, there is no arguing that their messages of hate and harmful beliefs were not easily erased through time. In fact, the messages they sent by their actions are what have defined them through history. Perhaps it is not the manner in which we send messages that is important, but rather the intent behind those messages we send?

The very manner of bullying at school has evolved. Confrontations in the school yard have progressed into complex exchanges on rapidly advancing social networks, a fact which is causing great concern to the many parents who find themselves a step behind the technological curve. However, hope is in sight at Ursuline Academy, as faculty members work to integrate a new program which will help students to recognize that spreading even small messages of hate can result in much bigger problems.

“Facing History and Ourselves,” is an educational program which encourages students to explore the “consequences of hatred…to recognize bigotry and indifference…and see that their own daily choices can have major impacts and perhaps even be a critical link to a safer future.” (ref). Through the interactive study of historical dilemmas like the Holocaust, Segregation and Genocide, students are presented with true facts about their history and are encouraged to discuss the small yet critical activities that sparked horrific incidents in their world.

“They want the kids to understand how it happened,” says long-time Ursuline Religion teacher Ellen Lytle, who is excited to integrate the lessons into her curriculum. “It will give the girls a great background into pre–World War II Germany, and will focus on events leading up to the Nazi Occupation,” she says. “Most importantly, there is an emphasis on how so few people helped those in need during that time…basically we need to know our past because we don’t ever want that to happen again.”

To learn methods of program implementation, teachers attend seminars which provide the information and tools necessary to design a solid lesson plan. With help from a program liaison and free access to a library of historical references, videos, and even multi-media resources, Ursuline teachers feel prepared to inspire and inform students. “We are currently looking for ways to integrate the program…to see where it would work best, and how many ways we can introduce the new concepts,” says Mrs. Lytle, who attended an “amazing” seminar during summer break.

There is a plan to gradually introduce aspects of the program into Religion and History classes at Ursuline. However, it seems that some teachers are anxious to get a head start. Mrs. Morency already implemented strategies similar to those encouraged by the program in her own class, by conducting a case study of sorts which prompted students to identify with how a bully might feel during a confrontation. “Some had trouble relating to the bully at first,” she said, “but ultimately many realized that at one time or another, they were the bully.”

"We hope to book a speaker at some point...one of Oscar Schindler's worker's who spent time in Auschwitz...she has an amazing story," says Lytle. According to her and other faculty members, the "Facing History" interactive program is a perfect response to the issue of bullying at school, as it simultaneously introduces students to conflicts they may face in the real world.

UA Social Studies teacher Colleen Peters perhaps says it best: "It is one thing for the students to hear this stuff in a lecture, it is another for them to see it."

Counting Their Chickens

Math challenge keeps students from 'flying the coop'

They say "Don't count your chickens..." However, Mrs. Mary Anderson has found that encouraging her 7th, 8th and 9th grade students to add up their chickens is actually a perfect way to motivate them in math class.

While in her first year at Ursuline fourteen years ago, Mrs. Anderson recognized that many of her young pupils were not showing great enthusiasm in class, as math facts and figures can often be intimidating for young minds. "I had a particular ninth grade class at the time who I felt were unmotivated by the material," she said, "I asked them for ideas of ways to get them excited about learning number facts...they asked to do something fun!"

Mrs. Anderson quickly realized that incorporating a friendly challenge during class might offer the students an opportunity to see their progress beyond her grade book. "One student told me about an elementary school game called 'Chickens,' so we designed a grid and gave everyone a velcro chicken. If the student answers a math equation or word problem correctly, they move their chicken along the grid." These days, if a student answers enough questions correctly and gets her initials to the last square, she is awarded a "Chicken," which relates to one extra quiz point.

"Kids love games, and many will turn just about any activity into a contest, or in other words, something to get good at," educational writer Richard Rusczyk says on his "Art of Problem Solving" blog. "Math contests thus inspire them to become good at mathematics just like sports encourage physical fitness. Eventually, students put aside the games. By then, hopefully an interest in the underlying activity has developed."

While some researches argue that competition in the classroom causes undue stress, Mrs. Anderson has designed her chicken game to accommodate all learning styles. "I try to see that everyone gets one by the end of the year...every student in every class has enjoyed it so far," she says, smiling. She believes that the proof of the game's success is not reflected on the students' report cards, but rather in the excitement they feel when they win their first chicken.

"The game helps you to try harder in class, and then you end up doing better on the tests," says seventh grader Jenny Weston, as she points to her initials on the board. "The competition part is fun, because when you see that someone else is about win, you try even harder to do your best."

With candy apples in their hands, tiny umbrellas in their smoothies and treats in their pockets, the students of Ursuline Academy had the spirit of Serviam in their hearts at the school’s annual Mission Day on October 5.

Typical classrooms transformed into colorful and thematic booths, each featuring donated items which were purchased by students, parents and friends of the school. “While we raised money for a good cause, we had a lot of fun,” said seventh grader Ashley Haughton, who most enjoyed when her teacher, Mr. Jaworski, was taken to the faux “Jail.” Some of the more popular rooms this year include The Beary Best Bakery, Fenway Park (featuring 2 Red Sox Championship rings, and franks of course), the Top Hat Raffle and the tropical Smoothie Room.

While students enjoyed spending their allowance on Mission Day treats, they did so knowing that their contributions were ultimately going to a worthy cause. My Brother’s Keeper, a local Christian charity that provides food and furniture to needy families throughout the year, was the grateful recipient of this year’s collection. At a beautiful opening Mass celebration, the community received a heartfelt "thank you" from Mr. Erich Miller, Executive Director of My Brother's Keeper: "We believe service is a privilege, not a duty or an obligation so we work hard to share that privilege with as many people as possible…please know how grateful and humbled we are that you’ve chosen to support My Brother’s Keeper today.”

To further emphasize the theme of the day, students also heard from Junior Emily Sullivan, who spoke of her summer service work in West Virginia. "If anyone is interested, talk to me," she encouraged, and provided information to her peers about the ways they can get involved in a similar mission trip.

"The generosity of parents, the generosity of time, and the will of the students is what make this event possible each year," says UA Campus Minister Marge Costa, who has overseen the charitable fair for the past thirty years. The event, which is now a fond tradition for community members, often draws local alumnae back to reminisce of Mission Days past. "I brought my boys a couple years ago. They had a blast and it was nice to see staff and all the changes to UA," graduate Katie Tower Verrette wrote on Ursuline's Facebook page.

According to Sister Nesta, who worked feverishly in the cash room, Ursuline raised approximately $14,800 for charity at this year's event. "The day was super-fantastic," says Mrs. Tomase, who ran the Beary Best Bakery. "There was a wonderful spirit this year, and the kids had a great time."

Ursuline Hearts Unite to Fight Cancer

A crowd of roughly 40,000 migrated to Boston's Hatch Shell last Sunday to support the American Cancer Society's annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Amid the crowd of 'pretty in pink' supporters, Team Ursuline Academy took the 2 mile stroll along the Charles as a sea of green, sporting school colors to demonstrate community enthusiasm as advocates of the cause.

In addition to the nearly 200 students, teachers, parents and siblings representing UA on the Esplanade, those generous contributors who supported the school's effort by making online donations were also considered members of the "Green Team." Numerous parents, friends and alumnae added to the pot, which tipped over $22,300 on the morning of the walk.

"Wonderful," Jeanie Zmijewski Taddeo wrote in response to a post on the UA Alumnae Facebook page. "I am a 1989 alumna who was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer when I was 15 weeks pregnant with my twin daughters! I am a 2 1/2 year survivor now!" Numerous other alumnae demonstrated support by "liking" similar posts about Ursuline's participation.

Last year, Ursuline followed quickly in the footsteps of partner school Catholic Memorial and took the Making Strides High School Challenge. With just two months to raise awareness among community members, students successfully netted just over $5,700. As winners of the "small school" category, Ursuline was recognized from high atop the Hatch Shell on Sunday. "It is our honor to receive this award," said Student Body President Jillian Lawler of West Roxbury, who accepted the plaque on behalf of her peers. "As young women, we feel that it is important for us to make a difference in our community."

Though the walk has come to an end, Ursuline students are already anticipating ways to further improve community participation next year. "What was so heartwarming and encouraging was how our students really embraced this project and embraced each other, " said Principal Mary Jo Keaney, who strolled with the community. "They really care to make a difference in the lives of others, and I try to learn from them every day."

To date, Team Ursuline Academy has raised $23,410.00. Thank you to those of you who have supported our effort this year. We are proud to have made strides against breast cancer.

Learning The Ropes

The tiny climber hardly noticed the cool raindrops hitting her cheeks as she climbed swiftly, peg by peg, up the trunk of the old tree. In one swift step, she released the last peg and planted both feet upon a tight rope extended between two sturdy oaks, planted about 20 feet apart. There she stood, beneath a beautiful canopy of trees: motionless. Her gaze was fixed on a navy blue bandanna, dangling at the opposite end of the rope. From the ground, reaching that object looked easy; from the opposite end of that rope high above the forest floor, the journey seemed significantly more challenging.

She moved one shaky step at a time as her classmates watched, eyes wide. With every step, they cheered. With every waiver, they held their breath. It was as if their gaze somehow kept her moving, steady. It was not a perfect journey. She looked down, and became afraid. She missed the rope, and leaned back. All the while, her friends cheered and clapped and egged her on. At one point in the middle of her journey she said, "I can't do it," and they told her, "you can!" Until finally, she made it, and was able to let go.

This month, Ursuline Academy's 7th and 9th grade students put on their play clothes and headed to Westwood's Hale Reservation for a unique team-building excursion: a one day interactive ropes course program which encourages students to learn more about their classmates, and themselves.

Since grade seven students are starting fresh, and this year's freshman class welcomed a large number of new students, Ursuline's Director of Guidance Mary Ferrucci thought that these two groups would benefit from a day of team-building exercises, as they prepare to work together in a classroom setting. "My goal is to provide an atmosphere outside of the school walls where students can challenge themselves, support and encourage their classmates."

Before setting out for a long day of outdoor excursions, each class split up into small teams. One student commented that this division of the large group made her experience more dynamic because it gave her the opportunity to "make new friends" outside of her regular circle. According to their follow-up evaluations of the field trip, many students shared this sentiment.

The small groups took part in various ropes challenges, problem solving scenarios, and even a few games for good measure. While one team worked to maneuver their way through a maze of wooden planks, another cheered on their teammate balancing high above the ground on a wet log. "Group encouragement is a very important part of this aspect of high ropes," according to Hale's philosophy, " and although an individual may be the one actually climbing, groups often feel a real shared level of success as individuals overcome fears and challenges."

Along with team-building exercises, each student got an opportunity to test her limits on the ropes course. After learning the basics from their experienced team leaders, each student took the opportunity to harness-up and hit the tree tops. "Everyone set their own goal," one student recalled, "some made it all the way and some only went to the top of the ladder." The goal of the exercise was not to reach the other end of the course, but to work toward a new goal!

While the exercises were simple by design, each created opportunities for those leaders of the group to emerge, while others worked productively as followers. One seventh grade student commented that one of the most important things she learned from the experiences was that her classmates each have "different strengths and weaknesses."

Ursuline's adventurous students returned from the wilderness with a better understanding of not only their own abilities, but also those of the classmates they work closely with each day. Some made new friends, others found new strengths and the group as a whole left with a new feeling of class unity, says Mrs. Ferrucci. "At the end of the day, this one shared experience creates a unique memory they can all share."
